More than 37% of Americans and up to 20% of the global population suffers from ongoing sinus problems known as chronic sinusitis. If you suffer from facial pressure or pain, sinus pressure headaches, stuffy nose, reduced smell, sinus pressure or nasal discharge, you may be one of the people suffering from the symptoms of chronic sinusitis.
If you suffer from these symptoms frequently, you may be a good candidate for Dr. Khetarpal’s Trademarked PIVA Office Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure.
Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that treats chronic rhinosinusitis and headaches or sinus/nasal congestion caused by chronic sinusitis. Unlike traditional procedures for opening the sinuses, balloon sinuplasty can be performed in the office rather than in an operating room and no need for general anesthesia.
Just like balloon angioplasty can be used to open up clots in the blood vessels of the heart, balloon sinuplasty opens up small sinus openings called ostia. This procedure makes it possible to open and enlarge the ostia without cutting or pulling tissue, minimizing the risk of bleeding and scarring.
Once the sinuses are more open, they can drain better, and infections become less common. Those that do occur tend to clear more quickly following balloon sinuplasty.
How Does it Work?
Balloon sinuplasty is performed in your doctor’s office. Either IV anesthesia or local anesthesia with or without sedation will be used to ensure your comfort. Once the area is numb, catheters are passed into the sinuses, and balloons are inflated to open the sinus openings. In some instances, a shaver may be used to remove bone, polyps or unhealthy mucosa during balloon sinuplasty in what is known as a hybrid procedure.
In mild cases, the entire procedure often takes less than 30 minutes, but it may take up to an hour for more severe cases. The procedure is minimally invasive, and complicates are rare. Most patients experience very little bleeding and are able to resume normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours.
Is Balloon Sinuplasty Right for You?
If you suffer from chronic sinusitis that does not respond well to medication, you may be a candidate for balloon sinuplasty. Most patients who undergo the procedure enjoy significant relief from their symptoms.
