Tuesday, October 31st, 2017

If you have been suffering from chronic or repeated sinus infections and feel like you’ve tried everything to get relief, you may wonder if balloon sinuplasty is right for you. For many patients, this treatment is effective in the treatment of chronic sinus infections that have not responded well to other methods. Are you a good candidate for balloon sinuplasty? Keep reading to find out.

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to treat sinus infections that last more than 12 weeks despite other treatment attempts. During the procedure, a thin wire with a light is inserted into your nasal cavity, followed by a small, flexible balloon. This balloon is then slowly inflated to gently expand the bones around your sinuses. A saline rinse is also used to flush out mucus, pus and any other irritants that may be present in your sinus passages. When finished, the balloon is deflated and removed, leaving your sinuses expanded and cleared out.

  • You struggle with problems like coughing, headaches, bad breath or nasal congestion as the result of sinus problems.
  • Your sinusitis is not related to an underlying structural problem like nasal polyps or a deviated septum.

What are the Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients are able to resume their normal daily activities within a day or two. Other benefits of this procedure include:

  • Effective symptom relief
  • FDA-approved
  • No incisions
  • Less pain than “open” sinus surgery
  • Lower risk of infection and complications
