When you think about rhinoplasty, or nose jobs, you probably think about people having the shape of the nose refined for cosmetic purposes. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures, and augmenting, reducing or reshaping the nose can lead to improved facial harmony and higher self-esteem.
At Sinus & Snoring Centers of Texas, we offer Brownsville rhinoplasty services as reconstructive surgery to correct injuries and birth defects and to correct functional issues. In fact, when combined with endoscopic sinus surgery or septoplasty, reshaping of the nose effectively treats many types of breathing problems.
How Rhinoplasty Works
At Sinus & Snoring Centers of Texas, most rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis with the use of IV sedation or general anesthesia. Closed rhinoplasty, where the incisions are made inside the nostrils, is the most common procedure. Open rhinoplasty, in which an incision is made between the nostrils, may also be used.
Both types of procedures involve your surgeon carefully lifting the soft tissue that covers the nose to allow access to the bone and cartilage underneath. The bone and cartilage are sculpted to the desired shape, and soft tissue is redraped over the underlying structure and stitched. Typically, the procedure takes about one to two hours.
Are You a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Many people are good candidates for rhinoplasty. If you are over the age of 13 and in good overall health, you may be a good candidate for this procedure. Patients should also be non-smokers, and it is important to have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the surgery. Only your surgeon can fully determine whether you are a good candidate for surgery.
Immediately following surgery, you may experience bruising, swelling, bleeding, pain, headaches or stuffiness. These symptoms are normal, and they usually subside within a few days. The majority of patients are absent from work for a week or less.
In the days following your procedure, the results will become apparent. Most patients are very happy with the results of rhinoplasty.
