Dr. Umang Khetarpal finished his medical school at the young age of 22 and is doubly trained in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck and Facial Plastic Surgery, first in India and then USA. He completed his internship and specialty residency training in Syracuse, New York. He also has extensive research experience and additional clinical experience through fellowships at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. He has co-authored book chapters and many publications in peer reviewed journals within the specialty. He has presented at major specialty society meetings and at academic institutions. Topics of his research included hearing loss and balance disorders, sinus problems and sleep apnea. He discovered and was the first to describe a novel ear disease in families that resulted in balance and hearing problems. His most innovative research was in the cutting-edge field of genetics in Otolaryngology where he was involved in finding the genetic defects for several different diseases. In addition, he has taken time to observe the surgical techniques of some of the world’s most renowned surgeons in plastics surgery. He had been featured 3 times over the years in newspapers in the Rio Grande Valley for introducing latest treatments in thyroid cancer, sleep apnea and sinus surgery locally. His current interest is in molecular genetics of allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis with and without polyps and in finding better cures for these conditions.

What is Dr. Khetarpal’s experience with sinus surgery?
Dr. Khetarpal has extensive experience with simple and complex sinus surgery for over 15 years. He has operated on very complex sinus polyps, skull base tumors or allergic fungal sinusitis and many revision cases requiring drilling within the sinuses or even open sinus surgery. He is very comfortable with revision sinus surgery. He has performed sinus surgery in very young children from the age of 2 years to that of adults up to the age of 91 years and is therefore skilled in operating on very tiny spaces, including those of children.

Dr. Khetarpal is one of a limited number of sinus surgeons across the country performing comprehensive sinus surgery in the office while also introducing the use of image guided endoscopic sinus surgery in the office. Dr. Khetarpal has performed complex endoscopic sinus surgeries for more than 15 years without any nasal packing. Dr. Khetarpal is a perfectionist, whether he is performing sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty, sleep apnea surgery, blepharoplasty, facelift or rhinoplasty.
He is currently involved in research projects trying to identify causes of chronic sinusitis and devising newer treatments. He has a Western Institutional Review Board approval for performing research on chronic sinusitis, allergic fungal sinusitis, nasal polyps and allergic rhinitis as well as on data collection and clinical research on these patients and on measuring outcomes of treatment. Dr. Khetarpal completed his residency training in Syracuse, New York and has extensive clinical and research experience at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. In addition to his interest in sinus disease and allergies, Dr. Khetarpal is Board certified in Sleep Medicine and also has a tremendous interest in rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery. He also brings his scholarship and research skills in improving treatments for chronic sinus disease and polyps as well as allergic fungal sinusitis.
